Laura Branigan was born on the 3rd of July 1957 in Brewster, NY.
Laura started out as a background singer to Leonard Cohen in the 70's and her
first hit as a solo
artist came in 1982 with the single "Gloria". This Italian song had
originally been a hit in europe in
the late seventies with Jonathan King. When Branigan recorded it in '82 (with
a different English
lyric from the King version), it went to No. 2 in the US and No. 6 in the UK.
Its follow-up "Solitaire" was another Top Tenner in America, though
not a major British success.
In 1984 she recorded another italian song and scored another international smash
with "Self Control".
In West Germany, the Branigan version went to No. 1 while the original italian
disc by co-writer Raffaele
Riefoli was simultaneously at No. 2.
Laura's been recording 7 albums over the years, which you can find more info
about on her website.
Laura recently released a remake of the ABBA song, "The Winner Takes It
All".
Laura made her off-Broadway debut in "Love, Janis" on Saturday, June
1st 2002, which is a story
about Janis Joplin. (http://www.lovejanis.com)
